ok so i got an 1989 dodge ram with a 318. and i am having problems with it. it runs really bad when it is cold. it runs ok when it is warm. but for some reason when it is cold it runs horrble. it idels really rough when i start it up and when i put it in gear it gets twice as bad. i put my foot on the gas and sometimes it dies and sometimes just the rpm's wont go up at all even if i have it floored. and it will barly move. and it shakes really bad and the cat makes a really loud banging noise. but when it is warn it has just a little miss and it moves, i can floor it and it will smoke my 33 in. super swampers so i am really puzzled what is wrong with it???? please give me some advice i am lost. thank you!!!!

I assume it is Fuel injected, so I would look for the cold start valve and replace it, it isnt giving the extra gas needed to enrichen the idle circuit,

If the EGR valve is stuck open it will run bad until the engine warms up. After the engine warms up, it is supposed to be open and will run good.

It's probably just the fact that it is an older engine which may cause a few problems but doesn't mean that you can't still burn some rubber.

dodges are bad for map sensors unplug it and see if it runs better if not start with the basics check your cap and rotor if all else fails take to a shop and get scanner hooked up so they can see the computers data stream.

go to the mecanic and get it fixed. that should help.
