Different reasons. For the most part though, there are different sects because they all have a different idea on what the best way is on going about practicing Christianity. They all have different levels of importance they place on personal Bible study, tradition, faith, works, ceremonies, which lines of the Bible are more important than others, etc.
Which one is the "best"? Gimme a break. ALL of them are going to say "WE are the best one. Don't listen to the others."
By the way, "non-denominational" is still a denomination.

So almost everyone will tell you that their denomination is the best. I think that you have to deside for yourself what you believe and then find a denomination that beleives most of the same stuff. If you already know what you believe but don't know what denomination to go with, email me @ wldcochise@yahoo.com and I'll send you to a denomination that suites your journey with God.
Rock on man!

The many denominations should not exist. Notice what 1 Corinthians 1:10 says;
"Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment."
Why do we have so many? Men are not satisfied to all speak the same thing. Men are not satisfied to teach only the word of God. Men are not satisfied to only speak where the Bible speaks, and be silent where the Bible is silent. Men are not content to do Bible things in Bible ways and call Bible things by Bible names. Too many wish to add their own desires and teach their own doctrine.
Notice 2 Timothy 4:2-4.
"Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."
To know which is best, listen to what they teach and then search the scriptures to see if it is true! Are they preaching "the word", or are they preaching their own doctrine?
Notice Acts 17:11, "Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so."
These were called noble because when they heard the apostle Paul, they compared his teaching to the scriptures. If they were noble to investigate the teaching of an apostle, then how much more important is it for us to investigate the things men teach today?!!
Compare the things the a church or a preacher teaches to the Bible! If the things they teach agrees with God's word, accept it. If the things they teach cannot be found in the Bible, reject that doctrine, or at least ask questions!
When you ask a Bible question, demand a Bible answer (with book, chapter, and verse), then read those verses, within their context, to see if they are properly used!
"Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15)

Im Apostolic and if you read 1 Cor 1: 10 you will see how denominations came to be. Its not the matter of which one is the best but which is teaching the true word of God, Denominations all started with only one person saying i disagree, thats how it all started and so many others came to be. I pray that you understand, God bless

I would honestly have to say that it's a personal choice. I am Catholic, but I don't feel that Catholicism is necessarily the best denomination out there; it's just the one that I felt the most drawn to. (I'm a convert.) I spent years learning about Catholicism before deciding to join the Church; it was not a decision I made lightly.
When it comes right down to it, it's up to the individual to decide. My advice to anyone is to pray about where they are on their spiritual journey, and await the answers patiently.
I hope my answer was somewhat helpful to you.

Well basically they all want to make their own version of the Bible instead of taking it for what it actually says. None of the denominations are 100% correct.

Usually it's something in scripture that the churches differ over. Some say, you have to be fully immersed in baptism. Others say, you have to speak in tongues to have God's holy spirit. Others say, you can't worship on Sunday, only on Saturday.
Find a church that teaches the bible, and points to Jesus, not rules, as the most important "principle".

Josh, the only thing that ever changed my life was following God's word, and being part of an honest fellowship of people who follow Jesus by following his word.
Religion is man's way to try to reach God.
Jesus and his word is God's way to reach man.
I want to know God.
Find a church that studies the entire Bible, chapter by chapter and verse by verse and you will find that you get to know God pretty quickly.
