Once your tooth is pulled a big blood clot forms in the lower sockets, which protects that area and helps it to heal. If you do any type of sucking (straws, etc.)or drink hot drinks or alcohol, even smoking, it can cause you to lose that clot and then you are much more susceptible to infection and it really hurts a lot.

HELLO,
THE ANSWER BELOW IS CORRECT. WHEN THE BLOOD CLOT IN THE EXTRACTION SOCKET IS LOST PREMATURELY, USUALLY 24-48 HOURS AFTER TE EXTRACTION THE BARE BONE IS OPEN TO THE AIR AND THE MOUTH. THIS IS THE WORST PAIN YOU CAN IMAGINE.
DO EVERYTHING THE DENTIST TELLS YOU TO AVOID GETTING IT. SEE THE LINK BELOW
