Okay I am gonna host an award for the "stupidest rule from a religion". So here are the nominees

1)Catholics(me, not that I take it that seriously if at all)-for prohibiting the use of condoms and birth control pills
2)Mormons-for not being able to drink coffee or anything with caffeine in it
3)Jehovas' Witnesses-for not being able to celebrate anything(even their own birthdays)
4)Muslims-for fasting and not being able to drink or eat anything for thirty days(even if theres plenty of food around)

if you wanna nominate or vote for anyone else, say who and why(gotta be a religion not me for posting this question)

anything that does not go by the book / The Catholics, no offense, have different sects within the Catholic churches..mel gibson, example, believes different in his catolic religion than his catholic father, did you see the look in his eyes when dianne sawyer asked him about his father?

& they have changed their laws several times in my lifetime.. not to mention,the molestation of all those little boys!

All four have some good in them. They all sound sort of goofy when taken out of context of the rest of the religion.

For example, the Catholic teaching is a great one if you keep in mind that sex is not to be practiced outside of marriage according to the Catholics. Also, the Catholics teach that we are to multiply and replenish the world. You must take the religion as a whole and almost all religions become reasonable and good.

I believe a different way - I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I don't have exactly the same view of sex. To me, sex is a wonderful and righteous thing when practiced bettween a husband and wife. Their are other purposes of sex other than conception. It should, as with anything, be done with control and righteousness.

Now - of course I am going to put my two cents in about the LDS teaching of no coffee and caffeine. All I'll say is that any health proessional who is knowledgable about the subject will tell you that these things are unhealthy in many ways. Each has certain benefits - for example, caffeine can be useful for asmatics, I understand. Some LDS people with athsema (I don't know how to spell that! lol) drink a Pepsi if they feel tight chested and it seems to help. This is a righteous thing, in my eyes.

I won't go on...lol...I said I was only going to say one thing! :o)

#1 is particularly crazy when this is told to starving, over-populated countries to do this. I know so many Catholics who are in disagreement over this; I don't know why they can't hold Vatican III and revise it again. Maybe this century. We'll see.

As for #2, one Mormon told me that it's only the coffee bean, not caffeine per se. I don't see why this or #4 is more ridiculous than any other religious dietary law though.

Now in #3, one thing that JWs can celebrate is a wedding anniversary. And since Mormons like polygamy, you'd think these two would get together.

Currently near the top of my list is the belief that the first woman was formed from a rib who then talked with a snake, AND that this should sincerely be taught in a science class. (Which, to be fair, I know Catholics aren't pushing.)

Well I do have to admit the legality in religion can go kinda far. However, I wouldnt tell the Jewish joke just cause Im jewish senario because really it can be offensive to others. I am guessing youre a Catholic though.

actually, Jehovah's Witnesses choose not to participate in pagan celebrations. and birthdays were not noted in the first century. except by non-believers. we don't need to jump into the worlds practices to feel accepted. as a Christian, we are like christ and he was no part of the world. he never commanded that we glorify ourselves by noting the day we were born. as a matter of fact, he said to memorialize the anniversary of his death. and we do each year. on the actual day, we don't move it to the first convenient Sunday. it's far too important for that.

does anyone realise that by simply being alive we are harming something else. by useing the computer, and the plastic, and electricity, and by driveing on roads, by useing cars, and buiklding houses and cities, by shoopping in supermarkets and such,,,,we cause harm to untold numbers of animals and plants....

it may be a good way to try to live, but it is impossible to achieve.

I'd have to say Catholics, because of the fact that they seem to be in more denial than any other organization in history. Just look at all of the atrocities that have stemmed from the catholic church in one way or the other over the years, and I'm only talking fairly recently!
