I am going to hide a nice cd and changer in a console in the used Jeep I just bought. It has a factory installed am/fm tape deck. A friend said that if I was going to go through the trouble of hiding the cd player I should find a factory am/fm radio to put in the dash. But I really don't think that anyone would steal a 13 year old am/fm factory tape deck would they? I mean who uses tapes anymore? People mostly steal radios to sell to pawn shops or friends... and I don't think that anyone is going to pay much for a crappy old radio vs. the possible trouble of trying to steal it. I know that someone somewhere will steal anything, but I just don't think that the chances are very high that someone will risk stealing a junky old radio. Any radio thieves here? Would you steal a crappy old tape deck?

I'm not concerned with them stealing the old tape deck, it came in a 94 Jeep Wrangler (factory radio), I dont want someone destroying the dash etc. for it. That would be great if a thief would laugh at my old tape deck and go on to another car... maybe he might even drop a couple of Benjamins in my car so that I might get a radio worth stealing LOL!

A crackhead trying to sell an 8-track to a pawshop... thats great, I picture Tyrone Biggums scratching his throat and trying to convince a pawnshop clerk that it was worth at least 8 or 9 bucks!

I dont live in a bad neighborhood, but you never know where you might have to park.

I dont have a hard top for it now, but I dont plan to use a top all summer except a bikini top. It would be even worse though if they broke my windows to get the junk radio. You can vacuum for days and still not get all of that broken glass out of your seats. Had it happen before... it sucks.

if you have a hradtop i wouldnt worry about it too much replace it with a headunit that has a removable face plate and carry the face plate with you. dont lose it though it costs half as much as the whole thing to get it replaced.....
p.s. i drive a jeep

I don't think anyone would go out of their way to break into your car just to steal a car cassette radio...unless they actually know someone who'd be willing to buy it. A thief usually has other motives in mind when breaking into a car. Taking something that is otherwise useless might just be icing on their cake. Like a consolation prize, along with all the other goodies they took from you...MORE is always better when your stealing...

Face it, most of the people stealing car radios today weren't born when cassette players were popular.

If you're really concerned, why not replace it with an 8-track?

I don't think so, but who knows, someone that needs drugs might steel anything, even an 8 track player

can you imagine a thief with 8 track player trying to sell it to a pawn shop

Could be that you have pressed the ta button so that you will get traffic repoorts coming on automatically, or it is because the cassette is wound to tight, fast forward it ( or rewind) end to end then try that, if it is only one cassette or if it is a few then i would say you have pressed the ta button, hope this helps.

I don't think a lot of cars still have cassette players, can you still buy cassettes? But it is crazy what people will steal just for the thrill of stealing.

If they stole one that ate the cassette tapes, the joke would be on them and they would have a ruined cassette!

i dont think they would take an old one. they look for the fancy flashy ones but now adays they come with removable face plates! as long as you dont leave valuables in veiw for thieves you should be fine.
