6 weeks is average--8 weeks is usually better for the kittens--but if kittens are eating enough kitten food at 4 weeks, and you absolutely cannot keep them, it can be done (we needed to give 4 kittens away at 4 weeks old--because our landlord was having a fit--threatened to evict us)--we were fortunate that my older daughter was living in a very large house at that time, and could take all 4 (we kept the 5th). She knew exactly everything we were doing with the kittens, so they were all fine in that instance--and they were together--it was the one we kept at home that was lonely without them (their mom was killed when they were 6 days old, and we'd bottle fed them, taught them to use the litter box, started feeding them strained baby meat before they could eat kitten food, etc.).

PLEASE READ ME! DO NOT GIVE YOUR KITTENS AWAY UNTIL THEY ARE 12 WEEKS OLD. Many of the folks on Yahoo! Answers mean well, but they really don't know what they're talking about. Kittens should be with their mother as long as possible...a 8 weeks is the absolute earliest they can go, but to have the healthiest, best behaved and best socialized kittens, they should be with their mothers for 12 full weeks. Ask any professional breeder of cats (not a veterinarian, not a cat owner, a BREEDER). They will never let their babies go before 12 weeks of age. Kittens are not like puppies. Puppies can go at 8 weeks, not kittens. Please keep them together for 3 full months. It is so important to a kitten's development to be with their littermates for this length of time. It's equally important to their development to be disciplined by their mother as well. You will see her wean them beginning at the 8th week. They will be fully weaned by 12. Supplement their nursing with food beginning at that time. Observe how well a mama cat reprimands her kittens when they are unruly. There is no substitute for this mothering. Good luck.

They should stay with Mom until they are 8 weeks old.By then, they should have one set of kitten shots, have been wormed at least twice, and mom should have an appointment to be spayed.Charge a fee for the kittens, whatever it costs you for their shots, plus 10.00 and use the extra money to get the mother spayed,so you won't contribute again to the heartbreaking surplus of kittens and cats dying in shelters and on the streets everyday.

The kittens need to stay with the mother until at least 8 weeks! These kittens will learn everything they need to know about how to be a cat from their mother in this time period. It is vitally important to the kittens chances to be "normal" cats, as kittens who weren't with their mothers for this time period have been shown to be more at risk to have developmental and behavioral problems down the road.

12 weeks is best. You can do it at 8 weeks, but the kittens are still learning lessons from their mom until about 12 weeks of age.

the kittens should stay with her until they are about 8 weeks old. She can be spayed at that time. If you want them to be friendly, you should handle them in a kind and gentle manner during the time they are with her (rather than leaving them alone or playing rough). They should be seen by a vet at around 8 to 9 weeks of age for their first visit and vaccines if you are vaccinating them.

No earlier than four to six weeks. The kittens will need to have opened their eyes and able to eat kitten food...otherwise...you're going to have to bottle feed the kittens.

Well the mother cat in my family after a while after showing them how to go potty and eat for themselves out of the dish, she would start to bat them away and hiss at them. So basically, they are getting the boot, they turned old enough to start fending for themselves.

I am thinking about 3 months old.
