The brand made by Lego is called Duplo Blocks, and there is also another set made called Mega Blocks. Other great toys for one year olds are stacking/nesting cups, pretend telephones (the big, chunky ones), pretend keys, pots and pans, cardboard boxes, balls, chunky cars, Little People sets, anything they can chew on (but not swallow), soft cloth books. Babies this age are more mobile, and can crawl after toys that move, so rolling toys are good choices. Mostly, they love things that aren't toys at all, which is why pots and boxes make such great, inexpensive toys. Just make sure that they don't have any small parts that can be swallowed/choked on, and that they are developmentally appropriate.

As others have mention, the blocks are Mega blocks or Duplo blocks. My son has the Mega Block Dump and Go Wagon. He got it for his 1st birthday, is now 20 months old and still plays with it literally every day. It was cheap, but a great gift! He also loves the Playskool Ball Popper. He is also into anything with wheels, cars, wagons, walkers, etc. If it has wheel he adores it. Another idea is a play tunnel and/or tent. Those are always big hits at play dates with both sexes. Finally, board books are a wonderful gift idea. They are fun and educational!

There are big ones called Duplos but really really big ones by Lego company called Quatros. Mega Blocks are similar but are not made by the lego company.

most everyone has it right withe duplos and mega blocks. Plus they love the cardboard building blocks. They make towers with them and push them down and they don't hurt anything. Another fun toy is pop-onz by fisher price. the blocks pop on each other and the activity table and they have little creatures that help the kids make believe. The best and cheapest thing my kids love are the magna doodles. we get the small fisher price ones because they can easily carry them around and they love being able to draw and color on them and erase them. we use them to teach too in that we will write their name on them and draw shapes. they are learning to draw shapes themselves using these.

My 1 year old loves balls, those Fisher Price peek-a-blocks, and anything "Grown-up" like cleaning kits, dolls, table & chairs, kitchen stuff. Buy things designed for a 2 year-old -- not for a 6-12 month old. She also loves those wooden puzzles, big books with holes or things to touch, and anything she can "drive".

They are called Duplos. I think that is how it is spelled! My 1 year old also loves just regular building blocks, books, and her little bike. It is one where she can put her feet on the ground and move it around. She also likes anything she can push, stroller, toy shopping cart etc.
