That is a very deep philosophical question. Maybe I should stimulate you a little deeper..

If God is omnipotent, benevolent, and omniscient, why is there evil in the world? Surely by the definition of God, he knows that their is evil, he doesn't want their to be evil, and he is capable of stopping it. So why is there evil?

The answer is that you have to answer the question for yourself. Advocates would say that Jesus did not commit suicide, rather he was a martyr for his cause. Surely he didn't kill himself. Others would argue along these lines. If you knew you were driving over a bridge (excuse the reference) that was going to collapse yet you did anyways, isn't that suicide? Depends on if there was anyone in the car behind you that you were trying to save.

Edit: Looking at the responses, I'm going to stand up for the asker a bit on this one. Doing something that you know, without a doubt, will kill you, is by definition suicide. The crux of this argument is that Jesus, being one with God, is the only person who could possibly know without a doubt that some action would kill him. Even those of us who would be reasonably certain that something might kill us aren't as sure as someone who is all knowing. To strengthen this, he was sent here to die for our sins. So he knew that his actions would kill himself.

This, however, is more commonly associated with martyrdom. To strengthen this definition, Jesus let them do what he or God easily could have stopped. He did it for a higher cause.

Suicide is things like hanging yourself, slitting your wrists, shooting yourself in the head. What happened to Jesus was at the hands of other people that killed him. So, no, he didn't commit suicide. He was murdered. Even though he had knowledge of what was to happen, it's not suicide. In todays world, that would be like you owing a drug dealer tons of money. You don't have the money to repay the dealer for the drugs. You are probably gonna die. Just because you didn't move to another city, and you get killed by your dealer, doesn't mean you committed suicide.

If this is the case, then all soldiers who fight for our country commit suicide, because they all are full aware that they can be killed.

So then firefighters who run into a burning building to help people is killed, is this suicide as well?

Jesus did not kill Himself, they killed Him. but it had to be done exactly as it was done, so that Scriptures would be fulfilled.

In His Holy and Precious Name, Jesus Christ

Jesus was in a sense suicidal in the way that he was willing to die to save us and forgive our sins. But in no way did he commit suicide. His death was basically his Dad asking him to show love to everyone although he never really died as he is always with us

I think of suicides as people who have lost all hope. But in the Bible, Jesus' teachings were filled with hope and wonder! I get what you are asking. But according to the Bible, Jesus gave his life to save others. Sort of like when people rescue others from accidents or in disasters, I guess. The firemen that rush in to burning buildings to save others don't think about it...they just do it because it is their jobs. Do you see what I mean?....Blessings.

What is your definition of suicide? If you were about to be hit by a car, and your best friend jumps in and pushes you out of the cars path and dies, did she commit suicide?

I think no. I don't think suicide is saving someone else's life for the price of your own.

Wow - that's a stretch... Suicide is to deliberately take one's own life...

God sent his son, Jesus to die for our sins = the ultimate sacrifice.

Not the ultimate act of cowardness = suicide

Jesus was born of a woman that he could be like us, and feel pain, hurt, happiness, sadness anger and ultimately death.

If not, we would have a God that could not sympathize with our hurt, pain, sufferring...

When Jesus took on flesh and became man, He humbled Himself and gave His life for sinners. This was the only way that mankind who believe could have peace with God.

great observation: a man dies for your sins and you say he committed suicide-Jesus was a manifestation of god sent in human form to die for us. but not only that he came to change the old law;because it had been corrupted. his real reason he came was for that change; but God knew that they would condemn him to death-for saying the old law has been corrupted. so technically Jesus did not come to earth to die, but he came to teach us what was the true law of God, his death was an inevitability of his actions. he died because of his teachings-to teach us the truth and save us-so a way to explain this easier is to say he died for our sins.
