1) An environment and mind for the ritual. At the very least this means having a setting where you give the ritual your undivided attention. There's no point in trying to say the rosary and watch TV at the same time. It has to be "cut off from the mundane world" in some sense.

2) An established start and end to the ritual. This works in conjunction with #1.

3) Tools that are conductive and consistent to the ritual. Altar, incense, scriptures, whatever. Even in some "idolless" religion like Islam, you still have a mat, a direction to face, and a body position to make.

Notice I didn't mention prayer or deity. That's because if you look at some of the ceremonies in far eastern religions (Zen tea ceremony, e.g.), this isn't a component. But all religions do have ceremony and dogma.

Water (for purification, which includes Babtisms and washing before praying, bathing in the Ganges, etc.)

Money (tithes, alms, donations, etc.)

Holy books, stories (to teach what they believe)
