She has to wake up at 6 am to get ready for school. I also have a 7 yr old and she doesn't need to wake up till 7:30 am. Is there such a thing as too much sleep at there ages? I don't want to put them to bed too early but I want them to do good in school too.

Our 13 year old, 11 year old, and 10 year old all have the same bedtime- and it's 9pm on school nights. Considering that the best literature on adolescent (and pre-teens') sleep patterns is that they need (NEED) between 9 and 10 hours of sleep a night and you say they have to get up at 6am so 9pm is the latest you should be allowing them up- otherwise they can't get the proper amount of sleep. That's exactly why ours go to sleep at 9pm-- they have to be up at 6:25am to be at the bus stop by 7:15am ready, dressed, and having had breakfast. That's my opinion, anyhow, and what works for us in our household. Good luck!

8 hrs before wakeup time. If they seem sleepy in the morning with that then you increase to 9 hrs and so on. Each child is different but the average is 8 hrs of sleep. So for your 12 year old 9 or 10 pm would work. With the 7 year old I would go with 9 pm as well. I guess what i am saying is 9 pm would probably work best for both

I think 8:30 to 9:00 is the best time.

But I asked my doctor about this...
He said that not later than 10 pm.

I would say 9:30 on school nights and 11:00 on Friday and Saturday night. Don't put them to bed too early. They have a life too.

10PM makes 8 hours of sleep for a 6am wake-up.

Yes, it is possible to get too much sleep. But some people need less, or more.

Time to start teaching a 12 yrold how to relax and sleep whenever it is possible. Deep sleep. Good dreams. It can be taught.
