Is John (Shag) Agle a contemporary artist?

looks fairly 60's to me, with a somewhat satirical edge. does it still count?

Yes, he is a super-contemporary artist -celebrities seem to love his work - even tho his paintings are based on commercial adverts from mid 50's and 60s.They have this innocent quality. There is a great site which has a long question and answer interview with him.

What I like about the particular composition which you showed us here, is that though it remind me to some extent of David Hockney's swimmng pool series, it carries some sort of storyline which we con't quite understand: where is this pool? Who are the couple talking to each other; who is waving from the car"? And so on. .

His name is Josh..not John.
Shag is derived from the last two letters of his first name, and the first two letters of his last name.

Born in 1962 and still working makes him a contemporary artist. That his style is reminiscent of 50's and 60's type illustration doesn't mean he's not contemporary.
