Buy something that is less than $3K and use the extra money for upkeep - oil, tires, insurance, etc.
An early 90's Toyota or Honda will do nicely. You probably don't really need an SUV; for the most part, they use too much gas and have poor reliability records.
Consumer Reports recently issued their car buying guide. Go to the library and see what they recommend in your price range. Look at the Kelly Blue Book web site for added info on what you should pay in your area.
A 4 will get you there just as soon as a 6 or V8.
What you will want to do is show your dad how responsible you can be with the car so the first is not the last. That means no tickets. Also, since you are starting to gain your independence, it's time to think about how a car will enable you to get an after school job. Better to have an obligation to be somewhere earning money than being available to go to the store or pick up the little brother/sister - in other words, become a "soccer mom"!

If you are seriously looking at the mid size suv category (with a good safety rating) that is under 7 grand, you better start looking at old or high mileage Saturn Vue's or Honda CRV's. You can probably find many options with Kia Sportage or Chevy/Geo Tracker that meet your price range, but safety ratings are not going to be where you Dad would like.

If you want safe, get a Volvo. If you look for one with 100,000+ miles on it, you might get it down to that price range. Otherwise, go for a high mileage Honda Civic that has side curtain airbags.
The thing about SUV's is that though you might find one in your price range, the price of gas will eat you alive. I have a Corolla that gets 28-32 mpg and I spend $60 a month on gas. Imagine filling a twenty gallon tank on an SUV that gets 15mpg.

the best thing to do is look around real good for a mid-sized one there's many different makes and models on the market now,and a lot of good used ones out there for under 7 k,i wont recommend any certain one, because until you look and find one you really like it would make no sense to tell you to buy just one make or model,go and look ,you,ll be surprised when you actually start looking at all of them, there's too many to name off, look ,drive and then decide, good luck with it.

98-02 Ford Explorers are good cheap solid suv's. If they are taken care of, the breakdowns and repairs are no more than other vehicles. Decent gas mileage, good cargo space, good feel to them. My dad gave me his old 2000 model when I turned 16.

How about a Volvo? They are pretty safe. They may be higher than Daddy wants to go. A simple Taurus or Sable are pretty safe and you should be able to find a decent one for that amount of money. good luck. Drive safe.

Don't buy an SUV that you aren't going to offroad or listen to "V6 or larger" jackasses. Buy any four or six cylinder Toyota, Honda, Volvo, Subaru, Mercedes or BMW.

A good clean used Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is fairly economical, affordable, dependable and safe. (Grand Cherokee Limited is too expensive and not worth the extra $$ and the Jeep Liberty's roll too easy)
The Laredo is a nice mid-size with a low-roll over rating and available with 4WD if you live up north. My son bought my husband's company Grand Cherokee when they retired it and he still drives it all the time and it has loads of miles on it. He really likes it.
