- Paganism worshiped a female deity...we know what happened to them
- Salem witch hunts - sought to crush any and all independently thinking women.
- Old testament pretty much treated women like 'complete' objects, akin to domesticated animals
- Islam, most forms have special 'rules' which some women choose to follow where as others are forced to follow.

- i do not wish to go into too many fine details...but from my 'limited' point of view, it just seems weird that so many women would follow something that has clearly had a history of maltreatment and sometimes violence towards them.

- this also obviously is from picking and choosing certain facts in order to try and emphasize my own views, but thats what all religions do...so I shouldn't be held accountable in that respect.

- also this is a generalization, obviously not all religions treat women with a lower regard to men, and I'm sure that there's a lot more out there that i have missed.

- I was brought up in as a muslim...so i do know a fair bit about gender equality in islam...however how its practiced varies widely from culture to culture the same way that a protestant will say that they are different catholic.

- The new testament is glorified and appeases people. I am talking about the original old testament...the 'first' so called word of god. Jesus made everything nice and polite for everyone, to a certain extent.

- also, although i was brought up in a muslim household my parents have given me free reign on what path to choose in life, and so far i like being an atheist...have been for about 6 years now...

also to mari mari and all others...your view has been narrowed by the blinders called religion...your mind is so rooted in this seeded belief, that you are not willing to accept any other interpretation of faith or science...it is this nature of 'do not question' that makes religion such a dangerous force...

Yes, it's baffling that women would follow a religion that reduces them to second-class status. However, lots of men believe in religious and political doctrines that are also self-defeating, so it must be a quirk of human psychology.

You make a very good point and I have wondered that myself. I think Christianity in particular has morphed a bit for women in recent decades. It is now a "relationship" with God. People are "in love" with Jesus. I see this as using God to fill the slot where women have now come to expect a "perfect man" in their lives. What more perfect man than one you determine the characteristics of? You can have your so-so marriage and fill the romanticistic void with Jesus. It's really weird. And I completely made up the word "romanticistic" because I don't mean romance, but romanticism.

I think that's a very good question you pose. The religious beliefs have caused some problems between my parents (as my father is very devout, and my mother is very much a free-thinking individual.) I still even butt heads with my father about certain issues (women not being housewives, women holding office, etc.) I personally could NEVER go back to being a part of that religion. So I really don't know how other women handle it.

No, you are wrong there.. Not all religions treat women unfairly. In the Catholic Religion women are not treated unfairly. Jesus treated the women in His Life and times with respect and love, and called each one of us His brother or sister. Our Church continues with Jesus's message of love and has done that from the beginning of time. Just because women cannot become Priests in the Church does not mean they are treated lower than the men. We are all chosen for different roles in life. Take the body for instance, can the hand do what the leg is called to do, or the eye what the ear is called to do... so with women and men. You are too stuck on gender roles and discrimination's, to see the wilder and greater vision. Take time out and pulse and see the wonder of God and His Glory and give thanks to Him for the life He has given you.

Good point Marz!

I can't stand it when all the Abrahamist religions claim that every once a month, a woman becomes unclean and must be kept away from everyone else plus white upholstered furniture. Geez! If it wan't for those supposedly "unclean" women, humans, as a species, would be doin' the dinosaur thing!

As you said, there are different practices of Islam depending on cultures or where you are coming from...but if you go back to basics and read more about it, you'll find plenty that talked about women's rights. People talk now about veils and oppression, but the reality is wearing a veil is a choice...
I think if it's practiced correctly people would love it, and wouldn't feel forced to do things, it would come out by choice.

You know, . . . up until about 7 years ago, I really didn't know a thing about Muslims. I don't know that I'd ever met one.
But, I do know this: I have seen the video of women getting shot in the head in a stadium, for the apparent amusement of onlookers.
I know all I need to know about them now.

I think you already answered your question.
In fact the last line of your additional details clearly provided the solution -- If you feel that much repulsed, don't believe in anything.

Your next questions should be, "Am I a pioneer in the field of spiritually liberated women?"

You go girl!

Pretty much the same reason abused women stick with boyfriends/husbands who beat them. Low self-esteem, tradition, etc.

Just like any other issue of a religious belief. The believers pick and choose what they like, and defend the rest out of ignorance.
