First, they were Volkswagen's !! Prior to the mid-80's, the VW was just the BEST darned cars: efficient, economical, stylish (except the Bus /Vanagon). The Scirocco itself was Zippy, handled great, and moved quickly.

I owned a 1972 Dasher, and my Brother had a 1978 Scirocco (both bought in 1982). We had a GREAT time adding an aero-package to his car, and I replaced the interiors on both cars with leather and cherry-wood veneers.

Sadly, his Scirocco was totaled in 1988 by a drunk driver who ran a red light T-boned my brother at NOON.

My Dasher lasted until 1992 when I was forced to surrender it during my divorce. My ex killed the car with neglect within a year.

I had two Sciroccos and loved them both. The engines weren't that powerful by today's standards, but if you consider the cars weighed next to nothing (my 1980 weighed 1976 lbs.) they were quick and handled very well. They were also relatively easy to maintain and parts were cheap. In their heyday, a lot of people (myself included) used to race them.

At the Lime Rock race track, they would throw different classes of cars on the track at the same time, and it was amazing to see the Corvettes blow past the VWs in the straightaways, and the VW's overtake them again in the turns. Not bad for a car that you could still drive home after the race was over.

My 84 Wolfburg Edition was my first car so of course I was attached. I also learned to drive a stick in it and it kept on running despite the terrible abuse! Plus, I loved the fact that they were and still are rare so nobody was going to have a car like mine - unlike Cavaliers or Corollas, which are everywhere. And, like many VW fans, they trully are die-hard cars that won lots of owners over.
