It depends on where you are right now, and which part of china your friend moved to. China is a pretty big country!

Most likely your friend is living in the coastal areas. There are flights between Beijing and San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York. Also, they are adding a new flight to D.C. It is also possible to fly into Shanghai and Guangzhou. More airports in China are also going to be open soon to transPacific travel.
Once in China, flying is certainly an option, as is taking the train. Train timetables and prices can be found at this convenient website: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/china-trains/index.htm
A direct flight will take anywhere from ten to thirteen hours depending on which coast you are on, and how far south you are flying in China (Beijing to Shanghai is a 1.5 hour flight, Beijing to Guangzhou is about 4 hours).

I'm living in China, Shanghai. From Puerto Rico to Shanghai (PVG) takes around 25 hours, depends of many factors; routes, and flights from which State to which part of China.
Be carefull, with the time because in China is around 12 hours more than US. Anyway, when you check the flights, check the schedule and the stops. On that moment you can check the exactly time per flight and route.

Good Prices!

It takes anywhere from 10 minutes to several months, depending on where you're coming from, what part of China you're going to (it's a huge country) and if you're flying, taking a train, boat or bus, driving, swimming, or walking. There are several other factors involved as well. So basically, that's a long way of saying that your question is so broad it's impossible to answer.

From the west coast of the United States, it will take 13-16 hours or more to travel by plane to places like Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong plus any layover time. Of course it will take much longer to connect from other cities in the US or to other cities in China depending where you are coming from and to where you are going. Good luck.

It took me 18 hours from LAX or San Francisco. That doesn't include getting to California and the time you waste waiting for the next flight or the two hours or more that you have to waste because of customs. It is a long trip but worth it. I hope that you go and have fun.

if you try booking a flight from local airlines online then you'll be able to know how many hours it is.
I'd use qantas or cathay pacific but it depends on where you live.
You wont have to pay anything until the final stage where you do make the booking with credit card.
