This should make you feel better.
Recently, I asked a patient if he wanted me to let him sleep during the night vs. waking him for a breathing treatment. He said go ahead and wake him. Without thinking, I replied "Yeah, you can sleep when you're dead, huh?" As the last word left my lips I remembered that he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He was really nice about it and we had a good talk, but man, did I feel like sinking into the ground!

Holy cats, yes. I did something really similar at my doctor's office and was so embarrassed I switched doctors so I wouldn't have to go back. MY BAD, all the way. Like you said, if looks could kill . . .

But it sounds like a slip of the tongue, (I know for real that was the story for my own boo-boo) and you know for yourself that you are not a racist ---- unfortunately I don't think you can make it right. The phrase "least said, soonest mended," comes to mind, and then just move on.

It happens. Don't beat yourself up too much about it. If you feel it's appropriate, the next time you call on this account you can tell your contact person honestly and forthrightly that you meant no harm. Don't say too much -- explain that you meant "chief" as in "boss" but as soon as it left your lips you realized it was a faux pas and that you are sorry.

Best of luck.

If we speak, we occasionally make mistakes. Being TOO PC is a bunch of crap as well, however, don't you think? People are now allowed to be so sensitive that conversation is nearly prohibited because people of different cultures/races/religions/sexual orientations ad naseum.

Not that I can recall. But then I don't exactly care about political correctness.

Never. I don't believe in being politically correct and I speak my mind all the time.
