thank you for all the answers... i was thinking of purchasing a minivan, it comes in a diesel turbo model, but no intercooler, i heard somewhere that intercoolers are a "must" for turbo's, is it ok to have a turbo without intercooler?
Thanks a bunch...

will run hot, the intercooler is a good invention, as a old trucker i know that the intercooler has saved many trucks from dying going up a big hill with alot of weight. they keep the head temp down and the overall temp of the cooling system, a turbo makes a great amount of heat and the intercooler is the only thing that keeps that excess heat to a minimum

I don't know what kinda trucks he as been driving, but most big trucks are pre-cooled. Pre-cooling allows a smaller turbo to provide boost to the large displacement engine, minimizing the dreaded "turbo-lag". Diesel fuel has more energy in it than gasoline when comparing equal sized containers, so the turbos are necessary to efficiently burn the fuel. The intercooler goes between the engine and the turbo, cooling the intake air, and condensing the air charge, lowering the pressure slightly and lowering the intake temperature.
