they are under NO obligation whatsoever. he disappeared, he wasn't killed or wounded in Action. For all you know the guy ran off with the cash register. the Base CO doesn't have to help his family at all. In fact, if they believe criminal action occurred, they are WELL within their rights to kick them off base.
and this applies to bases on both sides of the Pond.. US and British alike.
