There is something in the shifter that stops you from taking the car out of park unless you have your foot on the brake. It's called a neutral safety switch.

As weird as this may seem, try listening to the shifter while you put your foot on and off the brakes. You should hear a little "click" when you press on the pedal, and a "clunk" when you take your foot off. If you did spill coke in there, the little rod that locks the shifter in place may be stuck. A can of brake cleaner will dissolve any soda without shorting out electrical connections. (Note: use brake cleaner in well ventilated area. )

Also, have somebody stand behind the car when you hit the brakes to see if your brakelights go on. There is a little brake light switch that sits on top of the brake pedal lever. It almost looks like a one of those turkey poppers that pop when the turkey is done. When the pedal is in the normal position (driver not touching the brake pedal), the spring-loaded sensor button is pushed in and the brake lights are off. When you hit the brake pedal, it moves away from the switch, and when the button is extended all the way, it makes your brake lights turn on. Sometimes that button sticks, and your brake lights don't turn on => Neutral safety switch doesn't get the signal to release the rod => car doesn't go out of park.
If it's sticking, a quick shot of dry slicone lube or WD-40 will loosen it up.

This should be interesting.

Are you saying that it is gunked up and won't move? Can you see inside and see what is the hold up? A latch or a pin that is not releasing.? You will just have to work with it. Until it frees up. Good luck with this one.
