it means simply existence. you cannot have anything if that thing has no opposite. there is no up without down. there is no in without out. there is no above without below. everything must have an opposite to exist and yin and yang not only describe things, but the attributes and qualities of those things...

This is not exclusively an Eastern idea - the German philosopher Georg Hegel proposed that one take an idea, or thesis, and merge it with its polar opposite, or anti-thesis, to produce a synthesis of the two. His "dialectical" method later became the basis for Karl Marx's "dialectical materialism." This approach is also used in hard science, and can be observed in nature. For me, it is a method of reflective thinking and "transcending" the mundane. But right now, all I can think of is Rod Stewart singing:
"wartime is only the other side of peacetime, but if you've ever seen how wars are won; you know what it's like to wish peacetime would come, and don't it seem like a long time, seem like a long time, seem like a long, long time..."

It is duality and implied unity. Like the poles of a magnet...there is a positive and negative end (ie North and South pole) - but it is only one magnet.
You can not have one pole without the other.

to me, it means that there are no absolutes, everything falls within a continuum, and you can't really understand a thing without knowing its opposite. without the feminine, how do you know what's masculine, and so forth.

If God's thought is any younger (or older) than God, God-self... then, "this and that"... before physical... God could not sense Love (God). Thus the 'other'... God thought the physical... and God could sense other (God). But then the primeval fear instantly came to exis alsot.

The flaw I see is that not everything is an extreme. In reality, many things are not really good and not really bad... they're somewhere in between... in the gray area.
