My husband and I are thinking of taking our 4 year old and 10 month old on a 6 hour train ride instead of driving or flying. Anyone travel by train with kids? If yes, how was it?

We used to travel a fair amount with our daughter when she was a baby to visit family as we didn't have a car. It usually went very well, and we were able to take care of her better than say if we had been in a car. We took a bassinet with us when she was under 3mths old, then would let her sleep on our lap when she was older. The longest train ride was on an overnight train I did with just my daughter - I DO NOT recommend that as we didn't sleep well at all and were thus both very cranky the entire next day. With a 4yr old and a 10mth old, I would think you should do Ok. Of course bring as many different activities as you can for your 4 yr old to keep him/her entertained, but your 10mth old should be easy. Hopefully they will give you a seat for your 10mth old (for free of course) so you have enough room for a bag or two next to you for easy access to games, diapers, etc.

I did! My son was an adult at the time but some other parents on the train had a really good time because the could relax and let the little ones run up and down the aisles and not have to worry about the traffic or rest stops and squalling kids, there is a snack bar on the train to feed the kiddies and keep them juiced up and even a nice restaurant style dining car to eat lunch, dinner or breakfast at. Relax and leave the driving to the train driver!

my 4 yr old and 11 yr old grandsons loved it. We travelled everywhere in England this summer by train. They loved watching the countryside go by- places you don't get to see by car- and they slept just fine when they were tired
