your dad is right on this one, adding a 5.0 to it will be more work and more cost, and the 4.6 performance version will run off and leave a 5.0 engine, there's a lot of changing to do on swapping those out, just from my personal experience of doing this id stay with the 4.6 engine, its a good performer ,it just wouldn't be worth the cost to change them out,he,s right on this one, good luck on it.

Sorry man. I have both a 5.0 and a 4.6 GT. But I agree as well. The reason you probably didn't car for your 2 valve 4.6 was probably because of the lack of P.I. Heads and Intake. P.I. Swap was put on the 99 and up cars and gave them their 260hp rating over the 96 - 98 cars. These are easy to obtain from FRPP and other aftermarket companies. I know the 4.6 doesn't have the low-mid torque of the 5.0. But remember, the 5.0 can only dream of the mid-high torque that the 4.6 do and are capable of. They are both nice motors. Their are many reasons why you should switch to a 5.0 but ultimately, in your situation, it's probably not worth the hastle. If you do your 4.6 right before you put it back in (get the P.I swap and some bolt-ons) you'll be happy with the 4.6.

If the Mitsubishi had a clean title and lower mileage I'd say go for it, but you can really get shafted with an R-titled car. For example: I have a Cherokee with an R-Title, but since it was repaired a few months prior to me purchasing it, you'd never know that it had been hit. But then one day the motor mounts broke. I don't know if they were fractured in the accident, or the bolts were over torqued during repairs or whatever, but what I do know is that it left me stranded and with a really sucky job to do. Also 142k is pretty high mileage, especially for a sports car that the owner probably beat the hell out of. The Mustang will get worse gas mileage, and unfortunately it is automatic, but that could mean that the guy who owned it wasn't hugely into cars. This can be a double edged sword. It could mean that he didn't take care of it, since he just wasn't that into it, but it could also mean that he wasn't hooning it and doing crazy *** brakestands and hard launches. Of course this is just an educated guess. Also the lower mileage helps it's case in my book, even if it isn't THAT low, and the clean title is a huge plus. If the Mustang is indeed at a good price I'd say go ahead and get it. You may pay a lot for gas (and speeding tickets), but you will probably have a hell of a fun time with it.

4.6 all day long!!! I would even look into getting a low mileage used or a crate Ford Motorsports 3 valve 2005-2008 current engine with the correct processor you could have 300 hp.
With some calibration work 325 to 330 is not out of the question.
Good Luck

everyone is right you get nothing but headaches in that swap.
the performance numbers are the same with either engine.
the 5.0 nets lower rpm and worse gas milage. do your self one favor get a 99 or 2000 modle year engine and all you have to do is get a 99 and up intake manifold. the later 4.6 2v engine net 260hp were the 98 engine is 225. the difference in in the pi heads used in the later years

I agree with your Dad, it will be more work to put in the 5.0. Since you are getting a new engine, then get a super strong engine from Ford racing and put that in. You will have all the power you need or can afford. with the strong lower end, it will support a blower or nitrous. If you choose to put a huffer on the 4.6, get one with a lower compression ratio. (8.0 to1)
good luck.

Dad is right! there is no advantage to the 5.0 over the 4.6 they are both great motors and both got go power so stick with the easy one!

Wiring harness, computer, bellhousing, fronk K frame. A 4.6 is much easier to do. Just get the PI heads and Trickflow intake with some compcams camshafts and it will run great.

You would have to wiring harness as well. The 4.6 produces more horsepower. I wouldn't recommend doing it. To much of a headache, but it can be done.

The concept of "worth it" doesn't have any meaning here. You're talking about doing something difficult to get a decrease in performance. You'll have to come up with something better than that to be "worth it".
More to the point - do you think it's legal? It would be where I live, but you might not live here.
