Jinn are creatures like humans that are made up of "smokeless fire" according to the Quran. They are all around us, but we usually can't see them. They are what are commonly referred to as spirits, demons, apparitions, or shadow people in the West. They can be good or bad, and follow a variety of religions, as do humans. They can help or harm people in some cases and can be a source of information about future events. Some psychics work with them to gain information. They can, in some cases, possess people a la The Exorcist, especially if they are played around with. Normally they do not bother people, but live their own lives in the spirit world.

A Jinn is a spirit being, they can be good or evil. The shaytan are evil jinn and can be very powerful and very nasty. Jinn is the origin of the word genie.

Historically/Mythologically one could make bets or bargains with Jinn, but this was dangerous, because many Jinn enjoyed raking humans over the coals, particularly if the human didn't understand precisely what they were asking or offering.

Your dad probably regards Jinn as myth. You mom thinks they are real. Your dad doesn't want your mom to tell you scary stories.
