This question was sparked by bigdaddyp's answer to my earlier question in the Philosophy section.

The Wiccan faith asks that we give "harm to none"...but does that mean sometimes harming someone to prevent greater harm to others later? Is this vengance...or is there another word for it?

I would appreciate views from all faiths...just try to give me a context or example, please.

What you are describing is not vengeance. Harming someone to prevent greater harm to others later is good sense, and making hard decisions that will be unpopular.

Great leaders of nations and groups are often faced with such decisions. My personal viewpoint is not necessarily representative of any particular group, but I think that preventing the greater harm is certainly not vengeance unless the act is committed with happiness that the harmed one is being harmed. Instead, it is common sense, practicality, and imminently desirable to the greater harm.

One problem you might encounter in this scenario, however, is who is to say which of these is truly the worse harm overall, and harmful to who? More people? More important people? Says who?

see what I mean? When you use your own judgment to make these calls, you will undoubtedly have someone who disagrees with your assessments as to what is for the overall greater good.

Sorry, that's a very shallow understanding of Wicca.

The Rede tells us that those actions that cause no harm may be done as we will....those actions with the potential for harm may not be done as we will, but that does not mean they must not be done....it means that we alone are not the judges of whether or not they should be done.

Sometimes we must do a small harm to prevent a large one.

Breathe, and you harm microbes. Eat, and you harm plants or animals...take a job and deny a job to another. We *must* do small harms.

..that is a very hard question to answer.
one must look very deep within themselves and most are either afraid to try or become frightened by what they find.
i guess there is no real way of knowing until we reach the other side. only then are all things revealed.
sometimes the universe needs a helping hand but knowing when is for someone far wiser than me to decide i can only judge for me and i have to be willing to accept the consequences of that decision.
do what you will but harm no one....
when is it time to break that rule? i wish i could tell you the answer but maybe... just maybe... we will know it when it is time. maybe it will come as a vision or a feeling or a bolt of lightning. i just don't know.
blessed be to you jewel
you are a lovely version of your name.

A Wiccan will never purposely harm someone. They may wish that a person gets what they deserve, but they leave it to the God/Goddess to figure out what that is.

HI,
Call it what ever you want but,,,,,,harm who you will but pay the threefold price. I would NEVER harm to save another, EXCEPT a child. For that I'd pay even the price of death. Remember, everyone is the creator of their own universe so whatever effect they cause is theirs to learn from.
Blessed Be

The Universe and everything in it except for mankind is in perfect balance and harmony. Mankind is the only thing out of balance and harmony.

Harming someone is wrong for what ever reason, you can't predict the future and if they haven't harmed anyone...............
