There are some of those who are atheist and agnostic who may have been confirmed as a member into a religion since birth or had later in life made the decision to belong to a religion for themselves, but now are unbelievers. If they did not have their names removed from these religious affiliations then most are still considered members and are counted as such.
I have not personally met or known one who is a non-believer in God but claims to belong to a religion. There are the few I wouldn't doubt, who say they are of a religious belief which professes God, but deny it.
I think a hypocrite is an incorrect term as this implies one who claims to believe, but does not practice the morals and rituals of their religious belief which also doesn't mean they don't believe in God. Also there are moral people in all walks of life who believe in God but don't attend or belong to religious organizations.
Is there a word in the encyclopedia that gives a description of your person in question? I am trying to find that out too and will be watching this post.

adeist?

theist = belonging to a religion
atheist = not belonging to a religion
deist = not belonging to a religion but believes in some kind of god

so i would say the right description would be a atheistic theist.. or you could make up the new word adeist and call him or her a adeistic theist.

you could also possibly call him or her an agnostic.
they may or may not follow a religion but don't know if there is some kind of god.

ryan s: no its not, agnostic means you simply don't know if there is some kind of god or not.
most of them leaning towards atheism but holds the social attitudes and vocabulary of religious.
