The wife was told that she had to pay her new husband's account from a few years back or they would shut off her power. She was told they could do that because he was having benefit of the power. They don't mind paying it, but they are demanding an enormous (for them) amount of money and only the wife is currently employed and they have to move because the house they are renting is sold. They just can't do it. Help! I need to know quick

Seems like a stretch to me. Contact the states public utility commission (or whatever the state agency that oversees utilities is called in your state).

Doesn't sound like she married too well -- not working and bad debt.
