soaking is required to reduce the hardness of the chaff on brown rice. wash it soak for about 30 mins & then cook. but it is better that you cook the rice in the water in which you soaked it as many water soluble minerals & vitamins are present in that water

Yes, you can soak it for a couple of hour(rinse it a couple of time first, cleaning it) and after soaking it for a couple hours drain it put clean water and cook it! The longer you soak it (how can I say this?) then the more fluffier and soft it will be, tasting way better! Sometimes it depends on the rice brand you use as well......what kind are you using???????????

I am sure it cooks faster when you soak it.
I think it's 20 minutes to soak and 20 minutes to cook, using the same water.
