Everyone is a sinner, but no - there's no reason to think those people were the worst sinners and there's no reason to think the earthquake was a punishment from God.
The fall of humanity into sin had effects on everything, including the world we temporarily inhabit. Everything in Creation is now subject to “frustration” and “decay.” Sin is the ultimate cause of natural disasters just as it is the cause of death, disease, and suffering.
Before Mankind sinned God was holding nature back, keeping it in check. Once Adam and Eve sinned God allowed nature to take it's natural course and that is why earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes now happen.
Natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, windstorms, tsunamis show us our powerlessness. Man has to accept his limits. We cannot do anything we like but we have to respect the Earth. Man should use his God-given abilities and the world's resources in a responsible environmental way to avoid or minimise any damage for mankind.
Remember all this trouble and turmoil the world is going through is only a temporary state of affairs and all will be made perfect again when Jesus returns, and where you are going to spend all eternity is far more important than what happens to you down here.

Here we go again!
Please read the following and I promise that if you understand this, you will never have to ask this kind of question again, okay?
Luke 13
1 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
2 Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?
3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.
4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem?
5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."
There is not anything we can do about disasters liken that. There will never be anything we can do. It's not even the most important thing, as serious as it is. What's important is that we are right with God. If a disaster happens, we then are promised eternal life.
People think the same way now as they did then. It's just amazing.

What an immature point of view. I'll bet a very high percentage of the people that died were Christian and they are in heaven now and have no problems anymore. The sinners will get their turn later.
Why would God have to search out sinners? They are everywhere. Look in the mirror. If God did it why would He kill His own and let you suck up free air?
You probably eat enough to feed a whole family in some places. Instead of giving thanks for your blessings you blaspheme God?
However I believe in your right to be as stupid and arrogant as you like. Choose Hell if you prefer. I'll bring the wieners.

Franco, Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones in Peru. Condolences to all these familes.
This is a natural disaster that should point us all to Christ. The Bible Says that there would come Earthquakes in the time of the end. These calamities will only increased.
The Bible is being fulfilled.

Good and bad things happen to good and bad people. This is Biblical; it is clearly stated in several places. It's a purely human view that only good things 'should' happen to you if you're good, and that God is somehow supposed to make things work that way. We can't possibly hold God accountable to things that humans make up for Him to do. If you want to understand Him as best a human can, get to know Him through His word. Don't just read a few verses here and there to support your view or someone else's. Read the whole thing, yes, the entire Bible. If you aren't interested that much in getting to know the One you're saying bad things about, fine, read just the New Testament. Jesus said those who knew Him also knew the Father. Do get to know Him. Read the whole thing. Then, you might have and show a better understanding. Right now, you're making assumptions about God for which there is no basis in His nature or His Word. Please, pray to this same God for understanding before you read. That helps tons!

How do you know that it wasn't God's plan? Because they died, that's a bad thing? How do you know?
You DO realize that you're saying the exact same thing as they did in 1690 when there was an earthquake in Port Royal, Jamaica and hundreds of people were basically sucked down into the earth.
Death doesn't just happen to sinners.

Earthquakes are a natural occurrances, something that happens as the earth shifts. Babies can't sin, they don't have the ability to choose right from wrong. Do you think that death is a form of punishment? For many, death would be a welcome relief. Try to look at the big picture, death isn't the worst than can happen to man.

Here's what Jesus said in response to a very similar question.
Luke 13:1 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."

Death is part of life. It's as simple as that. There is no god and these people were just victims of a natural occurrence as we all will one day be. No god, no mystery, just the way it is. Over 40,000 people die each day from starvation alone in this world. Just because they are not on the 6:00 news does not mean their lives were any less important than the victims of this highly publicized earthquake.
