I'm working with a recruiter specializing in direct commissions of naval reserve officers. Based on my background, he's pushing me towards the supply corp. At 30 yrs old and married, the only way I can make this fly with the Mrs. is if I intentionally select the area that has the least chance of overseas deployment. (please don't give me any crap - I don't have to do this, but am chosing to serve my country and family).

My question - is the chance for overseas deployment greater for the supply corp or as an intelligence officer?

you WILL DEPLOY. period. Either Community has an equal chance.. they need Supplies in Zone just as much as they need Intelligence in zone. the Reserves especially are being Tapped for one year Individual Augmentee orders.

Reserves Direct

Contact a recruiter for the different branches of the service and ask him/her to direct you to whoever you must talk to to get straight answers as to what your options are. I would not consider becoming anything other than an officer, if I had a masters degree. The difference between enlisted and being an officer is the difference between hamburger and steak. Know matter what your loyalties are to the military and or your country, at some point you will retire (if you stay that long) and the retirement will be far superior as an officer. I, personally would look towards the reserves to gain the two retirements. It would seem that if you are IT qualified (they should be able to test for that) they would place you in that MOS. Good luck.

Why should you be exempt from deploying over the thousands of others in uniform? Just because the "Mrs." doesn't want it?
You think that you are the only one in the military that has a family? Geeesh, you really need to grow up and think about the contract you will have to sign with the Govt.
With this attitude, you really don't need to be in the military, and you really shouldn't be any sort of leader.
You don't want to "serve your country", you just want the job with all the benefits without the risks the rest of us in uniform share. Do the Navy a favor, don't join up.
BTW, as a very senior NCO with 27 years service, if you were my OIC with your attitude, I'd make your life a living nightmare.

Both about the same. Most of the intel and supply corps types are in mideast areas outside Iraq. Supply in Kuwait and Bahrain Island (home of the 5th Fleet). Intel types are in Qatr and Bahrain as well. But, word to the wise. One of the combat deaths in Baghdad was a Supply Corps Officer of the Regular Navy. His vehicle was hit by an IED.

Dude! Seriously! Think about your life goals. If you don't want to deploy then don't join. Joining and trying not to deploy is NOT serving your country. You may be joining for selfish reasons and think about that before you join, get activated, deployed, and have to lead men and or women in combat. If you wan the benifits and not the sacrifice then think of something else. I am not giving you crap. I am sincerely pointing out that when you are an officer..."it is not about you" anymore. It is all about the men and women that will say "yes sir" to all the dumb orders you give becuase you may be selfish and only look out for yourself.
What are your goals? And if they don't have leading young people the best that you can... then stay out of my military.
