..Well,brother Don,the Bible says to not touch God's annointed and also states that gossip is as the sin of murder.I would hopefully, be bold enough to defend him
rather than allowing the fear of man,to dictate silence on my part. Gossip and slander should not be happening in the body of Christ and is probably the most insidious, dangerous sin,in the local church. Gossip and slander has caused the division of many churches...
We have a responsibility to not only avoid participation in gossip but to stop it from spreading,by confronting those who are practicing it. This is not easy but if we see the seriousness of this sin through God's eyes and the devistation that a few words can cause,we would pray rather than say, more often. The Bible states that if we have a problem with a brother or sister...we should go to them and work things out, rather than involving others with itching ears with the latest morsel of gossip.
(((Beano))) (((Jack))) (((Don)))...three friends that I could trust any secret with...They are honorable and would not speak evil against me...I enjoy the company of many friends on R&S that I could also state the same of.

I would ask that person IF they would repeat what they are telling me, to the Pastor/Minister..If they wouldn't, I would have to ask them...why?
If you cannot repeat the subject in front of the person your speaking about, then you are gossiping..and the Lord says that is NOT the proper thing to do. Sometimes a simple & polite "reminder" in that "direction" will keep those kind of people from spreading anything further in your direction.
Unfortunately you cannot stop people from gossiping, but you can make sure you do your part, NOT to be a participant along with them.

I would certainly find out what that person was basing their opinion on. if it was based on an opinion, then as long as slander was not involved then everyone is entitled to an opinion, but if it is based on maliciousness, then you certainly have a right to your opinion and by all means, you should speak up to defend your Minister if you think that he/she should be defended. Is their a root to what is being said, did your minister behave in an inappropriate manner that has been proven....there is alot of info not being given but generically speaking, I would follow the above.

Consider the source and just walk away. I would then pray the more for my minister. He must be doing something right if Satan comes against him like that.

For some of the ignorant answers you have received.....
Minister is someone who serves.
In particular, I think you mean the Minister who labors and serves us and is specially gifted in the Word of God.
I would put the best construction on what ever the person is saying about him. If it was one of the congregation,I would do the same AND reprove them sharply!
Exact words would definitly have to be determined according to what is being said.
.......It is a fearful thing to slander your neighbor.
In fact, it is the breaking of the 8th Commandment.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

I do not have a minister, but when I hear someone speaking ill of a friend, I say, I don't care to hear bad things of my friend. I then start up another subject.

If someone was talking bad about my pastor or anyone else, I would always speak up and say thats not right to do that. But, if someone is only nicely questioning something a pastor just spoke about, I for one, do not consider that wrong. God tells us to check out all things that ppl say, to go back to the Bible, and check it all according to the things GOD says to know if it is true or not We are allowed to ask and discuss things, even the things our pastor says. but it is the way we go about it. It is to check things according to the word, or is it said to tear him down? That is the real question. Gossip is never ok. Learning the truths of God is necessary and we are called to do just that. IT depends on the motives and how they go about it, whether it is ok or not. Searching for truth in a good way, ok. just to run the pastor down, absolutely not. I would remind them that too. only way to go and still be Christian.

Put the minister under examination. There have been too many cases where the accusers have been right.

Is someone saying something bad about your minister to you? If so, tell them you do not engage in gossip, and forget it. If you are just hearing gossip from other people, ignore it.
David said in Psalms 56:4 "What can mere mortals do to me?" They can inflict pain, suffering, and death. But no person can rob us of our souls or our future beyond this life.
