Religion sprang up from people not understanding how things in nature worked so they came up with the idea that different Gods controlled different things. But as people began to understand how nature worked they started to follow a path toward spirituality and enlightenment and began to believe that there was life after death. Some people took advantage of these people's beliefs by using their beliefs to control people by saying if you want life after death you must follow these rules or go to hell. and that's what started the fear. In my belief "hell" is actually purgatory which is where spirits that are lost go. some times one of these spirits can be reborn, others can be helped to find their way to the light. So to me hell isn't a place where spirits are punished for sins but a place where lost and unenlightened spirits go.

Yours is not a new idea, see Richard Dawkins and his idea of religion as a meme virus.
Yes, "what if", but also, what if the Atheists are wrong and the theists are right? What if God exists and offers you life after death and you miss out on it because you do not at least test to see if it is true?

Your idea would be nice if the main reason people become Christian is out of fear of death. I don't expect you to understand, but most people become Christians because they realize the love of God. The fear of death or hell types are, well, more like yourself.

Yes, religion serves to help explain away death (or soothe its sting). Yes, it controls people (either by forcing loyalty or morality) in doing so. As for your prophetic dreams....join the club of a half-million other people who have the gall to assume that there is some sort of divine significance to their own little dreams, which are merely puddles of regurgitated sensation, muddled together with barely coherent thoughts. In general, deja vu is possible, prophecy is not.

What about this?
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God?
Why will people look to anything but God when He created all and left His word to tell us?
Then wonder why God would judge us?
Seek Him he is very very real and being christian is much more peaceful than having an empty space in your life where Jesus is supposed to be. At least try a prayer for yourself rather than listen to others who are just as lost as you are.
Peace.
