There are risks with Gastric Bypasses... Any kind. The greatest risk is leaks at the sites that are modified. I had a particular type in 2001. Not a RN. But because I had a really bad Haitial hernia It pulled on the place the new pouch was spliced into the intestine. Causing the intestine to fold over and cause a blockage. I had to have additional surgery to modify my bypass.
A really big problem with Gastric Bypass is that you can become malnourished because that first six feet of intestine is really important for metabolizing many different kinds of nutrients.
If I was to do this all over again today; I would have the Adjustable Lap Band. No Malnourishment problems and there is no cutting on your digestive system.

No they are very risky and doctors only will suggest having gastric bypass when other methods of weight loss have failed and the person who is considering the bypass is at high risks for heart attack and even death from obesity. The surgery is in fact a risk in itself, but some people have no choice or are willing to take that risk.

Gastric Bypass Surgery is a major surgery and does come with risks especially b/c the people having the surgery usually have other health problems b/c of their weight.
There are major pre-surgical considerations for the patient. Physically and emotional. you have to be ready to loose the weight as well as willing to have the surgery. You can't have this surgery and still have the mentality you are going to eat and eat you will become very sick.
If you are or anyone you know is considering this surgery, make sure you really research it!

Yes, if you go to an excellent doctor who practices in an excellent hospital.
There are lots of unexpected side effects from a gastric bypass. You should ask for references and talk to lots of people who have undergone this surgery before making your decision.
You will lose a lot of weight at first but the weight loss will not necessarily last if you cheat too much. So it's not a for sure -- happily ever after -- kind of operation.
My opinion is: if you have lots of complicating factors like diabetes, high blood pressure and other diseases related to obesity, then it's probably worth it to have the surgery. If you are doing it for purely cosmetic reasons, definitely NOT.

they can be if they are done correctly..but unfortunately my step mother had gastric bypass surgery, and when she got home she collapsed, went into a coma for 7 months where the doctor repeatedly did surgery on her. she eventually woke up, but she can no longer eat solid foods. don't let that scare you....just be careful on what doctor you choose. if you are looking into it....please do a thorough check of the doctors before you decide.

Absolutely not. Even the doctors who do these operations say they are not. Look into it if you are thinking about it.
