Lonely planet guide, (tells you all about local transport, places to eat and buy food in markets and alike, and things like what kind of plugs you need.)
Do not take electrical things for which you need a converter, your battery charger and laptop feed often can run on 240 as well as 110, if not, buy a different one once there.
But do take adapters if you bring anything electrical.
For clothing, bring jeans, t-shirts and maybe shorts and shirts and socks and underwear for a few weeks. Sweater. Light weight jacket, buy a winter coat locally, if needed.
If you are likely to need more dress-up clothing, bring one or two sets.
Jeans are not cheap in Europe, but all the other clothing can be had for good prices, so just bring few.
You might need to do your laundry more often at first but that is less work then to lug too much things with you.
Bring the things you can not buy there, like some photos of home and loved ones, your favorite music, (CD's or DVD's full of MP3 files if you have an MP3 player and a way to copy in on there.)
If you are particular about a brand of personal care items, like toothpaste or shaving cream, bring enough for the year, but remember that like products, maybe different brands can be had there too.
And bring your camera, sense of adventure and good mood, they will supply you with memories for a lifetime when you go home again.

Electrical converters. You can get a variety pack for all of Europe and Asia at Walmart. Look where the luggage tags are near luggage department. About $20. It will convert your electrical items over to their electricity - like your laptop, or video camera charger, etc.

Travel guide that you can buy for under $20 in any bookstore.
It will give you details on transportation, living, accomodations, hip sights, what to see and do, where to eat, where the nightlife is, and all that good stuff.
Good luck on your big excursion. I bet the year will fly by. I'm jealous!
