I guess this question is for Long Island residents. My friend gave my e-mail to a certain someone she wants me to meet, who happens to be Suffolk County police officer... I'm supposed to give him a call, but I'm curious will this born and raised Long Islander more than likely have that accent? Is it that common, or is it something you'll find on every other person?

Sorry, just wanted to add I'm from the midwest, so it may not sound Long Island to a native, but the slightest twang, I would probably notice.

I'm from LI and I don't think I have much of an accent with the exceptions of a few words I say that I don't even notice till someone points it out like I pronounce coffee "cawfee" alot. I'm so use to the accent that I barely notice and LI accent, just give him a call and see how he sounds :P.

If you are from the midwest you probably will notice a slight accent with anyone from NY, or the Northeast for that matter. I think most people in LI do not have the severe "Lawooooon Guylind" accent, some do. Not everyone has a pronounced accent but just the way certain things are said varies regionally. I you live in a certain area all your life you will adopt some language traits even if you are not aware of it. When i go elsewhere people always know I'm from the Northeast though I don't think I have an accent at all, I grew up in New England and live in NY, people always guess one or the other but it's not enough of one to pin me down anywhere I guess. Remember people in the midwest sound distinctive to us, even if the accent would be barely noticable compared to others around you there.

I don't live on Long Island....actually NJ.....but the accent is pretty common for people born and raised there.

I went to college in NY with a ton of people from Long Island....and for the most part almost all of them had the Long Island accent....it was pretty distinct!! I mean not everyone has it.....but if your from the Midwest there is definitely going to be a notable difference!! Good luck!!

i was born in queens, grew up on long isl, live there now, & you'd think i'd have that sterotypical accent but i dont- like pronouncing everything w/ an 'a' sound at the end of my words, the accent is however common but there are exceptions like me. But forget about the whole accent thing, i would judge him on his character rather then the sound of his voice

Two of my neighbors became Suffolk County cops. And no they don't have accents, and yes they are today making over a $100,000 a year with overtime.
