I think seminary is a great idea... for both the believer and the non-believer. Learning more about what you believe in is always benificial... if not to everyone, at least to you and your well-being.
Being well-educated about something you DO NOT believe in is also beneficial... you can't really say you don't agree with something if you don't know anything about it. That's like a kid saying he doesn't like spinach if he's never tried it.
The best arguments, both for and against religion, are from people who are well educated about the subject.

So no, I don't think it's a waste of time, even if the person never plans to go into the clergy.

And by the way, I love your name.

Not at all. There is a great deal to be learned in seminary. Languages, hiistory, different ways of thinking. No learning is a waste of time.

I'm an atheist, and I think as long as you're learning about positive, constructive stuff, then you're doing a good thing.

Look at Mister Rogers as a postive example. He had a ministry degree. If you follow in his footsteps, it's all good.

I'd pick up a couple of psychology and therapy books to study on the side though. Just because you have a good relationship and knowledge of God doesn't make you a good therapist, and unfortunately many people lean on ministers that are uneducated in therapy for therapy.

I think that whatever you believe in, is your own personal business. Kind of falls into that "To each his/her own" category. So, if Christians believe that they should go to Seminary, that's their perogitive. Just as it is my choice to stay home and practice my religion alone. It's not anyone else's place to say that another person's religion is a waste of anything.

No.
All education allows one to question, contemplate and make choices. Learning aids our growth. Not all seminary graduates continue on the same path they entered school on.

Nope. I figure a particular religion is either right or wrong about god. If it is right then - congratulations. If it is wrong then the people involved in it are still trying to be good people and to lead good lives (with a few exceptions for religions that promote violence).

So, for me, if you are trying to be a good person and not hurting anybody then I have no problem with how you want to go about doing it.

Seeking knowledge is never a waste of time but expecting a monetary return on the education may be.
