Yes, there's a Spanish equivalent (su vs tu), but, if you don't know Spanish, then it won't help you.

Both pairs, as you know, are possessive adjectives. And both pairs modify either a masculine noun (seu/teu) or a feminine noun (sua/tua).

Why have 2 pairs of possessive adjectives? Because the "seu/sua" pair belong to the 3rd person while the "teu/tua" belong to the 2nd person.

You know that in some varieties of Portuguese, notably European Portuguese, the common, informal form of address is "tu"? So, when referring to something which belongs to someone whom you are addressing as "tu", you would use either "teu(s)" or "tua(s)".

Now, as you know, in *most* of Brazil, "você" is the common, informal form of address. Although "você" is used as a 2nd person pronoun (to address a 2nd person), it takes 3rd person forms, not only in verbs, but also in possessive adjectives.

As well, you might address someone as "senhor/senhora" or "professor", "doutor", et al...and, although you are talking to a 2nd person, you would use 3rd person forms, the same as with "você".

So, if you address someone as "você" or "senhor" or "doutor", you would use the 3rd person possessive adjectives--seu(s)/sua(s)--to refer to something belonging to them. The same holds true, *in Brazil*, if you address people as "vocês", "senhores", "doutores", et al.

Where it gets tricky is when you have to refer to something that belongs to an actual 3rd person (as opposed to a mere grammatical 3rd person ;oD ). Then, in the areas where "você" is more common (or if you're talking to a person whom you normally address using a 3rd person form), you would say, eg, "O carro dele", to avoid confusion.

"Seu carro" would be the one belonging to you, "você." While "teu carro" would be the one belonging to you, "tu".

Forms of address are a bit more complex than what I've reduced them to--I think more so in Portugal than in Brazil (not more difficult or more formal necessarily; there are just more options...I'll try to find an article that will explain it better), but...

suffice it to say that:

1) teu/tua are 2nd person possessive adjectives;

2) seu/sua are 3rd person possessive adjectives, sometimes used as 2nd person possessive adjectives, on both sides of the Atlantic.
