Some of the better studios may charge upward of $100 per hour, and the sound engineer may make a good portion of that, BUT the sound engineer will only be making good bucks of the studio is booked 24/7 (a lot of them aren't booked solid). If the studio pays strictly by the hour, then there probably isn't a medical plan, vacation pay, or other benefits.

By the time you take your $35 to $50 per hour raw pay, take out dead time, taxes and pay for your own insurance, retirement, etc., the equivalent pay can be down around $15 to 20 per hour.

If you prove yourself to be a good sound engineer (with hard work and experience) then you might get up to the $40/hour (net) range someday.

You know, most of the ones I know work for free. I think it's one of those fun side jobs that everybody wants! No heavy lifting.
