preferrably around 4-8mp, and one of the "slim" cameras for portability (ie: in a purse)

You're at an advantage starting at this time because prices have come down and there're some good buys out there. Pixels are the dots that make up the digital picture and are counted in millions of pixels - the more the better. Good makes? Well, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, Ricoh, Casio, (mostly Japanese). For around £100-150, you can easily get a 6-7 megapx compact with autofocus, 3x zoom, flash, etc. Choose one with optical zoom as they are better, SD card memory as they're cheaper and very compact but memory sticks are OK too, and if possible with an optical viewfinder. Some people prefer one that can use disposable AA batteries as they are easy to get when you;re running low.

Here is the PERFECT camera for you!

You should get the PENTAX Optio W30. Its slim, sleek, stylish, with 7 megapixels, has lots of features like a macro setting for pictures up to half an inch away! Plus its waterproof down to 10ft for 2 hours!!

I have had the PENTAX Optio W10 for a few years and I have never had ANY problems with it at all! It is such a great camera and I LOVE it!

It has TONS of features, VERY good picture quality, its sleek & stylish. And its waterproof! You can see the camera here: http://www.pentaximaging.com/products/pr...
I have had the PENTAX Optio W10 (a slighty older version) for a few years now and I absolutely LOVE it!

(If you half press the button and hold it half way, it gets the camera ready to take a fast picture, then right when you want to take the picture, press the button fully and it takes the picture right away! The camera also turns on in about 2 seconds!)

I have found that one of the very best websites to get a digital camera online is at Amazon.com. You know you can trust them as the world's largest online retailer and they have the A to Z Guarantee to cover all your purchases.

Amazon has a massive assortment of Digital Cameras and they sell everything from low-cost models to luxury professional digital slr cameras at amazing prices so you ought to discover something that matches your own budget.

Look into Amazon's huge choice of digital cameras at http://amzn.to/Amazon-Camera-Store

Purchasing digital cameras from some shop online or a random ebay seller that you have actually never heard of is really high-risk. Even if you do get exactly what you paid for would you trust them with your credit card details. You know with Amazon it will be amongst the least expensive online and you can trust them.

Good luck
