I too had this problem with my German Shepherds. They would start to eat it and I would tell them the command "Leave it" in a strong, commanding voice. After several times, if they even started to look at it I would tell them "Leave it". Now they go and get a drink out of her water bowl, but 90% of the time don't bother the cat food at all.
Good luck. Dogs can be broken of this habit, but you must be firm and consistent!!!!!!!!!

If you free feed your cat dry food you could go a long way to making this easy for yourself. Put the cat's food bowl up on the counter, or some other place where the dog can't get it. If you feed it at regular times just don't let the dog in the area while the cat is eating. Simple :)

Feed the cats in a different area away from the dog, do not let the dog eat the cat food. it's not good for the dog.

Do what I do with my cats and dogs!
I put my cats away in there room while the dogs eat and when the dogs are done, put the cats food down and put the dogs away, so the cats can eat only there food in peace
But cat food can hurt your dogs stomach!

The lazy way would be to put the cat's food up on a shelf somewhere. That's how my bf's mom fixed that problem.
I do what someone else suggested--feed them in seperate rooms. But this works best when the cat eats the entire bowl in one setting.
:)

Put the cat food on a counter. And yes it is non-nutrional for a dog. there is no reason why a dog should eat it. it would be like living ff of pizza and mcdonalds all your life

The cat food is not good for the dog. It will not cause health problems, but I wouldn't let him do it on a regular basis. You just need to tell him "No." firmly and spray him with a squirt bottle.
