...and have not returned since then.Why would this be?

No storms or earthquakes here lately.(NE Ohio).

The American Goldfinch should be found year round in Ohio...but they are migratory as well...so the birds you had feeding and breeding there may have taken off to head down south for the winter, and you may soon see birds that bred up in Canada arriving to spend their winter in Ohio.

Time to migrate perhaps or the weather is too hot and they have moved back into the woods for shade and food and shelter. Nature in general.
