My doctoral dissertation was on the meditative practice of unknowing.
So, yes, universities give degrees in things that are unknowable. Those things, morevover, can be explored empirically.

Education is a profitable enterprise. Theology and religion are but two examples. The twelve disciples had no training other than Jesus' teachings.
There are scores of things you can go to school for today that once you could just learn from someone who knew............
I am reminded of the adage, "those who can do, and those who can't teach".

in the sense that they are not learning anything factual, yes, they are a joke. but on the other hand they are learning, and gaining a sense of something that is (unfortunately) a part of our society.

what is truly "knowable?" there are those who seek degrees in different fields based on interest - since "theology" simply means "words about God" - getting a degree in theology is just as valid as a degree in any other "ology"

Perhaps it is about following an intelligent path, than reaching a clear destination. Knowing and learning is the process of coming.
