DO what you want I do not think you are ready for the military if you want some ones opinion. You can do both in the military however are you even qualified to be an officer?? Do you understand the requirements to be an officer are tough and so is being a pilot.
I am assuming you will ask me how you can be a professor in the military. Well you can be a pilot trainee your first term and then a pilot. After your first tour you can be an instructor teaching military pre-pilots to fly. Another way is if you receive your masters degree you can teach at many of our university's for example Comand and Staff College in Kansas, Naval post-grad school in Monterrey Ca, Defense acquisition university in Point Loma, USMA in York, Annapolis in MD, AF academy in CO, and many others all over the states. I would tell you to join the Navy and fly for them because they are the 2nd biggest branch and have several times more planes than the Airforce do, so you may have a better chance of becoming a pilot with them.
You will most likely go thru pj training.
Ways to discharge are Honorable, other than honorable, admin, general, and Bad conduct/dishonorable discharge.
I hope this helps you in anyway
This is in response to Nancy statment
Just because you become a pilot in the military it does not mean you will be a bomber. We have several differant types of aircraft that do more than bombing for example: medevacs, logistics, search & rescue, traveling (like US Airways), anti- radar, recon, humantarian planes such as the Airforce AC-130 from Puerto Rico which flew with a joint team of Army-AF Doctors, Nurses, and medical personeel to Peru to help with humatarian relief. We have planes that do way more than just bomb.
It is sad that in this day and age not that many people really realize what our military is capable and it is not just war in Iraq. I will tell you I was part of a humatarian team (US Navy) that helped with Hurricane Katrina.
I hope to educate you Nancy, our planes are not just for bombing, you need to look at the bigger picture the US military is one of the best organizations in the world. It is sad that we only get negative media attention most of the time.

Wow, I'm in the same boat as you are. But in my case I'm not shotting to become a professor. I really want to be a pilot too for the Air Force, and I'm trying my best to become one. You can try to talk to a recruiter and ask if you can take a test to see if you are capable and meet the standards mentally and physically. You also need 20/20 vision. If you can do this before you sign up. You also need a 4-year college degree. When you have time, learn about: aerodynamic, meteorology, physics, and be well in mathematic, such as calculus. An also have a back up plan, like become a professor. Well in your case try shotting for both, if one fails you have the other one to fall back on. Good Luck, and I hope you succeed in either one you choose.

The Air Force will decide if you are going to be a pilot, it won't be your choice. Stay out learn to fly on the weekends and become a professor (whatever that means), because we probably need more teachers, so that we won't need so many pilots in the future.

TO be an Air Force pilot, you have to be working towards it from about your freshmen year in HIGH SCHOOL.
We're talking:
straight A's in advanced classes
Varsity letter, preferably Team Captain
Volunteering
Attain your private pilots license
Have your state Senator endorse you to attend the Air Force Academy
etc.
etc.

If you're really not sure about joining the military, I wouldn't do it. It's an enormous commitment and it's nothing to go half-a**sed into. They will expect 150%, and if you're not willing to give it, do something else. Be a professor and get your private pilots license.

Stick with what you want. Try to be a pilot and if not accepted try being a professor. Life is hard but you have to try.

You can be a professor at an university or college that offers Air Force ROTC.
Consider the US Air Force Academy.

In order to become a pilot in the Air Force, you need to have a college degree. Most likely in aeronautical science.
