Right now my cat is 11 years old, she's overweight, and I go off to college in three years. My family has two cats, one of them is mine and the other is my mom's(my dad hates cats). should i take my cat off to college or should i leave her here when i go? my cat loves me and she gets really depressed when i go on vacation but im afraid if i take her to college then she will get too stressed because of her new surroundings after 14 years. what should I do?

Did you say three years?? That's a long time! There are too many unknowns so you really shouldn't worry too much about it now. By then you will need to re-access your cat's health condition, your cat's relationships with the other two cats then, and also your living condition when you are in college. I bet you don't even know which college you are going to for sure yet. It's too early to plan things out. For now you should just be the best friend for your cat and give her as much attention as you could and show her that you love her.

Most people stay in residence their first year so you would not be able to bring your cat with you.

If you are not staying in Residence you have to consider where you will be living and who you would be living with. Will you be into the party seen? Will you have a lot of people at your place? Will you trust the people around you not to give your cat something they shouldn't?

So much can change in 3 years. I would wait until you are a lot closer, like the summer before you leave. When I went to college I left my kitty at home. In the end I think it was the best choice for me, he enjoyed the familiar surrondings and the company of the other familly cat. He was depressed at first but got over it. I enjoyed the freedom of not having to stress about when I went away for weekends and school breaks or what my friends were doing to my cat when I wasn't watching.

It is a hard decision especially this far in advance. Wait until the summer before you leave then decide what will fit into your lifestyle the best. Then make a list of the positives and negatives of taking your kitty with you.

So much can change in 3 years. Just wait awhile.

As much as you love your cat it's not a good idea. The room that you may live in may not allow pets, or your room mate could be allegic to your friend. Also, she is getting older and more space for her to roam is better than keeping her trapped in a dorm. As sad as your kitty may be when you leave, you will be happier and so will she because she will have two other kitties to hang with. Also coast of having a kitty in college will be expensive. Litter food and vet trips are not what a college student wants to worry about either. I know this is not what you want to hear, but it's for the best. I promise!

In an ideal world you could take your cat. Having said that, my daughter went through the same think when she went to college. First of all she was in a dorm so she wasn't allowed to take her, but even practically it doesn't work.
Your cat will miss you, but if she is in a strange place and gets out she could be lost or hurt and not know how to get back.
If you are going someplace that is safe, and allows cats you might consider it, but moving an animal is always difficult, add the age and it's better not to

Take her with you but you should be aware that most college dorms do not allow pets. It would be too stressful on her to take her to college and then find out that she can't stay or that your roommate is allergic or doesn't like cats. I would wait until you've been at a college for atleast a week and see how she does. If she is doing ok, then leave her at home. If she is too upset and you have a dorm that allows pets then you can take her to school.

My goodness! You certainly have other things to "worry" about than something that is three years down the road.

I don't think it would be a good idea to take your cat with you when you go away. She will still have the home she is used to and you know she will be well provided for. She will certainly miss you and will adjust to the situation.

When you are away at school you really will not have much time for her. It is a new life for you and I don't think it would be good for her or you to try to make her a part of it.

No, cats are territorial and hate being moved. Plus, you are taking her away from her companion. You will not be able to take the place of that companion, and you will spend a lot of time away from your room.

You will be more involved in activities that take you out of your room and into the college life- libraries, study rooms, cafeterias, classrooms, social clubs... these are places that cats aren't welcome. It would be kinder to let your cat stay in familiar surroundings.

Otherwise you may end up with a neurotic cat on your hands.

If you will live in a dorm, which they require all first years to do, then you won't be able to bring her with you. I say leave her home. Think about her and don't be selfish. Her needs come before yours. She'll be too old when you go off to college.

You're free to do as you wish. But having a cat with you will definitely make it more difficult for you to find housing when you go to school.
