Marine aviators are trained to provide close air support of ground troops. A submarine represents a threat to sink ships of the amphibious transport group which are hauling the Marines to the landing area. Enemey aircraft, especially those of the Japanese Special Attack Squadrons (a.k.a. "Kamikaze) also represented a threat to sink or cripple those ships. In fact, the Special Attack Squadrons inflicted more damage to ships and more Navy deaths in the Battle of Okinawa than their Combined Northern Fleet counterparts did at Pearl Harbor.
There's an old adage: Embarkation must support Debarkation.
You can't off-load what you didn't load on board in the first place. If you lose men and material to enemy Naval and Aerial attack before debarkation, the entire operation could be in danger of failing.

In the past the Marines were linked to the Navy. Marines still serve on naval vessels even though they are a separate branch of service. Marine air is taught at Annapolis.

So therefore the Marines had (not sure it it's still true) a dual role, Amphibious warfare and Naval support.
