I got my dog when I was 7 for christmas... That is when 101 dalmations were HUGE! Anyways I am the youngest girl with 2 older brothers and they are extremely close (with each other, not me) The dog is now 13 yrs old and still has the run of a 3 yr old. I have recently told my boyfriend that I live with how close I am with my dog and he laughed at me... almost like I wasn't being serious. When things hit the fan at my house and my brothers would cling to each other I would have my dog. Is this strange to anybody?

Nope. Me and my dog have a very close bond. He is the first thing I look for when I get home. We are almost never apart at the moment becuase I'm unemployed so we spend literally hours upon hours hiking and doing dog parks every day together. All summer he has came every where with me. Now most would say that is easy. But he is no lap dog and i can barly lift him lol. he is a collie at about 70lbs, he is my 4 legged baby.

When you've had a dog for a long time and you love it and it has been with you for so long it is normal to have such a bond. Dogs never have judged, made fun, abandoned, complained, critiqued or hurt us in any way and through our lives people have done all of the above. You're dogs been with you through it all and it's like when people go through an accident they come out stronger. Your boyfriend hasn't had a dog and doesn't know the feeling like other people with dogs do.

I'm happy of the relationship you've had!

Not strange at all. Even if you were to marry this guy or any other guy, your dog will most likely be your closest companion for you and other dogs for a lot of other people. It is something about a dogs understanding and loyalty. It is not at all strange unless you just don't like dogs. Help your boyfriend get to know your dog. Good Luck!

No, it isn't strange to me. I don't have any siblings, and I developed a close bond with one of our dogs who became 'mine'. She died about 2 years ago, and I got a new dog, of a different breed. I've gotten close to him now to. It isn't odd, I figure your boyfriend just doesn't get how much of a bond you can have with a dog. At that age, you really needed a bond with somebody, and a dog is about as good as humans, if not better. So I mean, it's odd to some people, but I've grown up with dogs, and I understand.

My mom bought a 3 year old cocker spaniel when she found out she was pregnant with me. That was the best dog I ever had. Since she was a single mom for a while that was my babysitter. She died when I was 14 years old. We were very very close. I have moved on since then. My husband understands my bond with our dogs. He used to have a dog when he was little too. So I say it is very healthy to have a very close bond with your dog. At one time their was a study published that said having a dog lowers your blood pressure and relaxes you so you live longer.

when I was a child my father was extremely abusive. I had multiple emergency room visits due to him. We had a dog and sometimes I would sleep in the dog house just to get away from him (my dad I mean). My dad could not touch me when he was around. So no, I don't think being close to your dog is strange or anything like that.

No not at all, I have a close bond with my dog and usually we are inseperable. My brother got him for right before he died and from the beginging I cherished my puppy. After my brother passed away all I had was my dog. I was injured, stuck at home and apart from my boyfriend at the time. I was devastated and at rock bottom. He helped me get back on my feet. Now that my boyfriend and I are back together, my dog hates him and he hates my dog. My boyfriend hates how close I am with my dog, but when no one else was there for me my dog was. They love you unconditionally and accept for who you are at all times.

No problem..I love my dog like a best friend too. I actually cried when I saw her limping for like 3 days, and I didnt cry when I heard my great grandmother died cuz I didnt know her that well (and she's family!) ..wierd but dogs are like people and u spend a lot of time with them so its normal to feel that way.

I don't find that strange at all. That's the way it should be! I love my dog dearly and I know the feeling is mutual. In fact, we're a package deal....love me, love my dog, and if my dog doesn't like you....chances are that I wont either! :)

There is nothing wrong with having a bond with you dog ! A lot of people have strong bonds with their animals and someone laughing at it is very insensitive and usually the sign that they missed out when they were young ! :-)
