The Spirit is a gift to you from God, it's a constant guide and companion throughout your earthly life. He is like God's presence and conscience constantly keeping you safe from harm, from evil, from falling away from the church, all the bad stuff that would be considered bad in the spiritual/religious realm.
The Spirit testifies truth to you all the time.

You have the gift given to you on a promise on your part to live your life in such a way as to be worthy of his holy presence. If you live against the church's teaching, the Spirit will withdraw from you. If you follow God's teachings, it will return and be a stronger presence in your life.

You don't speak in other tongues, or other stuff. Although, with the Spirit you can be blessed to retain more information, express yourself to mean what you want to, to learn a new language and speak it fluently as if it were your first language. Many missionaries can testify to you about this ability. My husband speaks more Spanish than I do because he went on a Spanish speaking mission to Argentina, and I was born in Mexico and lived with my family who only spoke Spanish to me for 23 years.

I am ex-LDS but they practice giving the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands, just as was done in Acts. However the Holy Ghost is only given in reality by men or a church that God approves... so if perchance God disapproves of the LDS or whoever... it does not matter whether they lay hands on someone's head or not... they do not get the Holy Ghost. God is not going to recognize apostates.

Other Restoration churches also lay hands for the holy ghost right after baptism.

Tongues can come after this but only rarely. One thing about tongues... Evangelicals teach the day of pentecost event was "unknown tongues" or the "Tongues of angels" yet in Acts they spoke in OTHER tongues, in other words in other known languages. Also it may have not been so much speaking in diverse tongues but INTERPRETING in other tongues... it seems the hearers had the gift, rather than the speaker. The Holy Ghost can manifest itself in many ways, not just unknown tongues.

Paul teaches we should not forbid tongues but if one does speak in unknown tongues there also must be an interpretation. I have seen some Charismatics babbling on like a broken washing machine with no interpretation or understanding whatsoever... it was downright creepy.

When I was LDS I did not witness a single miracle or gift of the spirit once... I did not even know the gifts even existed. I suppose if one were to speak in tongues in their church they would be horrified and label the man a heretic.

Actually, nothing happens. After confirmation, you get up, shake hands withe all the priesthood holders, and go sit down with the rest of the congregation.

It's not much different than attending a funeral, except everyone smiles more, and then there's all the fussing and gladhanding that takes place in the foyer after the meeting. This way is far more 'dignified', especially if you're only eight years old.

Anyone who gets up and shouts "Hallelujah!" and starts babbling incoherently would be reason enough to summons medical help.

We don't "do" anything when we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. We make promises to God that we will follow His commandments, and help others. There are other things that go along with it, but we believe that we can have God's spirit with us always, to help us in everyday life.

We do believe in talking in tongues, but not like that. We don't just start talking jibberish because we have the spirit. The spirit helps us to understand languages, or to learn languages, just like we would if we had spoken it our whole lives. Someone else mentioned missionaries that go on foreign speaking missions. We believe this is the gift of tongues.

I have found that because I have the spirit with me always, I am able to discern good and bad easier, I'm more able to see truth and more able to discern lies. It also helps me to deal with my children, helps to answer my prayers, and gives me comfort when I need it.

Anyone can feel the spirit, if they are open to it. We all have the ability to have God's spirit with us. We just believe that we can have it with us always, if it's given with the proper authority.

John 14:26, The Holy Spirit is our teacher & Comforter. Psalms 2 is foretelling of Jesus, verses 6-7, "Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee". Verse 2 tells of the kings of the earth who are against the Lord and cast away His truth and replace it with falsehoods & etc. Verse 4 , "He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh:::: The Lord shall have them in derision." This derision will make God Laugh. Derision is #3932 in the Strong's Exhaustive Concordance and it means, as if imitating a foreigner, speak unintelligibly, mock. That is not the Holy Spirit that I look to for my teaching and Comfort. Be careful what you teach or God may have you in derision and may I never be laughed at by My Father.

After a person receives the gift of the Holy Ghost, he/she is supposed to try to live the gospel, continue to repent, and serve his/her fellow men. Any gifts of the Spirit, can be, but don't need to be demonstrated.

Upon baptism, the new member is given the gift of the Holy Ghost through the laying on of hands by requisite priesthood authority--the Melchizedek Priesthood.

After that, the member is to agree to serve God and keep His commandments. Other covenants are to take upon themselves the name of Christ; to bear one another's burdens, that they may be light; to mourn with those that mourns; to comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that we may be, even until death.

There is no other "stuff" that you mention. None of it is stuffing.
