I have done some research into LDS burial rites but haven't found any references covering what would happen in a situation where the physical body wasn't avaliable. I have read about Baptisms by proxy but this is a question about burials for active LDS members. The possible outcome of the Utah coal mine collapse is what made me originally wonder about LDS funerals but it goes beyond that now. In a situation similiar to that they would at least have an idea where the decease's body located but what about situations where they have no idea where a body is located such as victim of foul play or an MIA soldier where there no body is ever recovered? Any help in finding an anwer would be greatly appreciated.

At an LDS funeral there is attention paid to the body and the grave. We call attention to the physical resurrection and eternal life we hope for.

We still recognize that the remains are not the same as the resurrected glorified bodies we may have. Heavenly Father is the creator of the universe. When He wants to He can collect all my molecules where ever they are.

Are you concerned about the resurrection or the funeral?
I have not known anyone who didn't have their relative's body to bury. I would imagine the person's family would just have some type of memorial service... the Lord would understand the person's situation and I am sure everything will work out according to the Lord's will. The person would not be denied any blessings or anything like that just because their body was not buried in the typical LDS way.

A funeral is merely a rite or somber ceremony, and in the case were there is no body, a casket need not be dedicated. My experience with GIs in body bags coming back from Vietnam, identities were verified by dog tags, not necessarily the body parts found. Many times there was simply too little to 'salvage'.

Most lds would agree that if a reasonable search for a body has been made but no results obtained, the ball falls in God's court to account for and provide the stuff for 'resurrection'.

Doesn't matter. Anything is possible through God. We believe that our bodies will be resurrected just as Christ was and that our bodies will be whole again AND in a perfect state. No impact whatsoever.

The body is not lost to God.
It will not affect the afterlife.
