He shouldn't have said that.

Culturally speaking you are right, it should have been she or I.. No concept of etiquette. Didn't they tell you about men, male ego, cave men, you never have heard of a Neanderthal women. They didn't have them. Duck tape is good or put them in the closet. Life is too short to waste it on a faux pas. There is no manner in which you can explain it. Sounds like jealousy. A good book on "Emotional Intelligence" by Peter SomethingOrOther is at trans4mind .com and other free ebooks. He will never be the same again. Ah, but presenting a problem without a solution is mere gossip and in bad taste. That book and many other free ebooks on the site should help you raise your children to be independent adults, both of them.

I feel for the kid. We've tried to teach our child from an early age that it's not right to say "I love you more than Mom (or Dad)," even if he's angry with one of us at the time. I think being on equal ground at all times is important.
Regarding the man who says it in front of the crowd, perhaps he needs an ego boost. Inappropriate, I say.

Evidently that person is putting the kid under the spotlight, it is something terrible, you can't tell a kid (or anyone for that matter) to decide qho he loves the most. That makes him feel bad, embarassed and lowers his security. It is also a way for parents to feel good about themselves in an egoistic and foolish manner. never confront kids in front of other people; well... never confront kids about their feelings between one persona and another at all.

Those questions posed in front of or not in front of a group are HORRIBLE and show not only a lack of social etiquette but a lack of feelings toward the other person. I would not associate with a person like that, especially if they did that to me in public.

This doesn't make any sense?
It sounds like a rude statement to ask people who they like better. Someone who is insecure would do such a thing.

These are no-win situations. It is a tacky way to treat someone.

Well, for starters, I'd think that person has poor grammar.
The proper pronoun is "whom."
Otherwise, that's just really immature.

I'd need more information; this seems to be rather cryptic as it is. I need the who what where, etc.
