We are traveling to Leicester to rent a narrow boat at Union Wharf for a week in November 2007. If you have any ideas about things to do and/or which canals are best please let us know.

Not a lot of choice from Leicester as it sits on the Grand Union Canal so you go either left or right out of the boatyard. The company who rents you the boat should have a suggested set of routes.

It is very "locky" part of the system so at 4mph plus 3 locks an hour it would take you a minimum of 13 hours cruising to get south to Foxton (assuming you are good on locks) Pretty countryside 'though. You can admire, but not use the Foxton 10 lock 'stair'.

North you could easily get to Nottingham in 13 hours, and the fun of Kegworth Deep Lock (over 30 feet!) and cruise the Trent a while (and you can moor by Sainsburys in Nottingham).

Use the one page Lockmaster maps - good value, and check the BWB website for closures as these happen in winter.

Enjoy - slowly.
