Historically, crusaders were people who faught in the crusades. The crusades were a series of wars to re-capture the 'holy land' (what is now Lebanon and Isreal, mostly), which had been in the hands of the (Christian) Byzantine Empire, before it fell to Muslems.
The Crusades were successful to varying degrees, but never for long. The 'holy land' remained in Muslem hands more or less continuously from the end of the Crusades, until the end of WWI and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, when it fell under English rule as the British Mandate of Palestine.

There were a number of Crusades, movements of Western Christians on military missions to fight against Muslims ... but some of them never got off the ground, and some ended up sacking other Christian lands, instead.
The most notorious event is probably the massacre of the men, women and children at Ma'arra, during the First Crusade. There the Christians not only slaughtered the town's population, but also fed themselves on the inhabitants' bodies.

A crusader today is any human, worldwide, who strongly believes in a cause to use something, (a salesman) or to do something, (a leader type) or to BE transformed to some higher religious belief or practice.(a religious or spiritual teacher type)
There are millions of crusaders now, in many different old and new religions and some are not religious, such as a crusader for or against nuclear power as being the best.
Soon, global freezing crusaders will become more popular. Ha ha.

For me at least, crusaders stand for everthing that has resulted from the arrogance taught by some religions. You're actually hurting other people trying to spread your religion!
